Ongoing Ministries

Inner City High School Food Drive

The Saint John’s Philoptochos is partnering with the staff at English High School in Jamaica Plain to help provide their students and their families with food. Many students at the school live in shelters and don’t have a place to call home. Upon seeing so many students homeless and hungry, some of the staff of English High School came together to start a faculty-run food pantry. Prior to the recent Christmas break, the pantry was completely empty. Students were stocking up for themselves and their families as they knew they wouldn’t have the opportunity to get food while the school was closed for vacation. The Saint John’s Philoptochos hopes to help this initiative by continually stocking the food pantry with food, toiletries and paper products. These items go directly to the students and their families, who are all in need.

Thank you in advance for your support

In collaboration with their neighbors the Pine Street Inn Outreach Team and with the extreme generosity of the faithful parishioners, they have provided over 100 bags for both male and female individuals, filled with essential toiletry items including a fleece blanket, hats, gloves and socks.

Father Theodore Barbas blessed the first bags after Liturgy on Sunday Oct. 18. The bags were then delivered to the Pine Street Inn and instantly distributed to individuals in need. As this is an on going project, the Philoptochos will be continuing this ministry with more bags and reaching out to homeless veterans as well.
