PASCHA 2013
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In the last week of April, “Great Lent” (Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή) reaches its completion and is succeeded by “The Great and Holy Week” (Αγία και Μεγάλη Εβδομάς).
“The Great and Holy Week,” also called “The Week of the Passion” (Εβδομάς των Παθών), re-initiates us into the Holy Passion of our Lord, through which He abolished the works of the Devil and delivered humanity from sin and death. This is the “Pascha of the Cross” (Πάσχα Σταυρόσιμο), which fulfilled the “Jewish Pascha” and opened up the “Christian Pascha,” the “Pascha of the Resurrection” (Πάσχα Aναστάσιμο). The “Pascha of the Resurrection” is marked by the “New Week,” which succeeds the “Great and Holy Week.”
The “New Week” (Διακαινήσιμος) begins with the “Day of the Resurrection,” the 1st of the Sabbaths, the 8th day, the Day of the Lord (Κυριακή) and is followed by the Pentecostal Period, which is consummated on the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Pentecost marks the birthday of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
These events of God’s saving economy and especially the Birth of the Church (the Ark of Salvation), unite Jews and Gentiles into a new People of God (a New Israel) and open humanity to its ultimate perspectives, the restoration of human and cosmic life in the eternal Kingdom of God.
The best way to understand these new and saving perspectives of the human and cosmic predicament is to follow the feasts of this period. Two themes seem to be the pinnacles of these perspectives: the Mystery of the Cross and the Mystery of the Resurrection. By way of introduction to these two themes and mysteries I have chosen some articles which you can read in the current “Forerunner” for April-May-June.
I greet you all with the wish that this year’s Paschal festivities bring all of us closer to the new perspectives of the Cross and the Resurrection which our Lord has granted us. Καλό Πάσχα και Καλή Ανάσταση!
