William KasidaWilliam “Bill” James Kasida, 88, was Salesman & WWII Navy veteran
William “Bill” James Kasida, had love & respect for people and music of all cultures, died on August 12, 2010 of cancer, in his sleep.  A retired siding and roofing salesman and WWII Naval veteran, the Brookline resident was 88.

Bill was the son of James Kasida of Asia Minor and Annetta "Anna" Patsas, the daughter of the Mayor of Hortiati, a suburb of Thessaloniki, Greece.  James and Anna eloped, immigrating to the US in 1915, where they settled in Haverhill, Massachusetts.  James and Anna had two daughters, Bessie (1917) and Aspasia (1919), before Bill was born in 1922.  Mother Anna, Bill and his sisters formed a close-knit family and were active in the community including the Greek Orthodox Church in Haverhill.

Bill graduated from Haverhill High School.  During WWII, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served as a Carpenters Mate in the South Pacific. After the war, he held a number of management jobs including  positions at Dunkin Donuts, Grossmans Lumber and Stetson Windows.  From the late 1950’s Bill made a living as a siding and roofing salesman.  He easily bonded with people of varied backgrounds and each claimed each other as their own.

In 1957, Bill married Melpomeni ‘Marion’ Dantos of Haverhill.  The couple had two sons, William James, Jr and Timothy Charles.  Marion passed away in 1965. The family eventually settled in Southwick Massachusetts where the boys attended primary and high schools.  In the early 1990’s Bill moved to Springfield, Massachusetts and onto Brookline in 2005.

Bill lived life his way and always with an accepting and an open mind.  He was a devoted and loving father and believed it was important to show a genuine interest in kids.  Children were drawn to his magic tricks, adults to his genuine and humorous personality.  He found something to like in just about everyone.  Bill adored his son Tim’s wife Shalini (nee Patel) and his granddaughter Elina, 5.

He is survived by his son Tim  Kasida, daughter-in-law Shalini and granddaughter Elina of Boston, Massachusetts; sister Bessie “Kassie” Economos and his close friend and brother-in-law Dr. George Economos of Bethesda, Maryland; sister Aspasia Kasida of Haverhill, Massachusetts; niece Gayle V. Economos and great-niece Zoe Dolan of Baltimore, Maryland; nephew James W. Economos, wife Kim, and great-nephews Gregory and Phillip of Huntington Beach, California.  Bill attended St. John the Baptist, Hellenic Orthodox Church in Boston’s South End as a young man and again since returning to the Boston area in 2005.

Expressions of sympathy maybe made to St. John the Baptist, Hellenic Orthodox Church in his memory.

New Pictorial Book Offers History of Metropolis of Boston and its Parishes

METROPOLITAN METHODIOS INTRODUCED THE BOOK "GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCHES OF NEW ENGLAND--THE METROPOLIS OF BOSTON AND ITS PARISHES" TO THE PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENTS WHO MET WITH HIM IN THE GREAT ROOM OF THE RETREAT HOUSE DURING THE OPEN HOUSE AT THE SAINT METHODIOS FAITH & HERITAGE CENTER ON SATURDAY, JULY 24.
The Metropolis of Boston has published a new book which contains its history and that of the parishes that comprise it.  The hardcover volume is illustrated with magnificent color photographs.  It contains brief historic synopses and photographs depicting the exteriors and interiors of all Greek Orthodox Churches in New England.  "We thank Almighty God for the pioneers of Orthodoxy, the hierarchs, priests and deacons as well as the faithful laity----our great-grandparents, grandparents and parents who bequeathed our Faith and heritage to the present generation," says Metropolitan Methodios.   "Reading through the text, one is impressed with what the founders accomplished, and comes to appreciate the sacrifices made so that Orthodoxy and Hellenism not only survive, but prosper in New England and throughout America."
The tome also contains an article titled, "Why We Should Be Interested in the History of Our Metropolis and its Communities," a brief history of the Metropolis and the hierarchs who served it, and a section on Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.  There are also articles and photographs of the Metropolis Administration Center, the Philoxenia House, and the Saint Methodios Faith & Heritage Center and Retreat House.
The inspiring vignettes from the parish histories include the following:  "To raise funds for the church, the organizers asked every Greek house to contribute five cents per person weekly and a penny tax was levied upon each loaf of bread purchased from the Greek bakery."  "Church records show that approximately 50 young men and women served in the armed forces in World War II.  Parishioners at home were active in defense plant employment, working on farms, preparing gift packs, organizing blood drives, wrapping Red Cross bandages and helping to fund the war through the purchase of war bonds."   "The astounding achievements of the founders are a testimony to the power of faith, the greatness of the Hellenic Spirit and the strength of a Community that stands united."
The book was designed and compiled by Anastasia Tanis Smith.  Almost all photographs were taken by George Panagakos. Great Benefactors George and Margo Behrakis underwrote the publication of the magnificent volume which is available at all parishes of the Metropolis.
